Dental Crowns

Why do I need a crown?

A crown is a custom-made restoration that completely covers your tooth. Crowns not only repair and strengthen a damaged tooth. They can also be used to improve your appearance by covering a discolored or misshapen tooth.

You may need a crown if:

  • Your tooth has fractured
  • An old crown or filling has failed
  • You’ve had root canal therapy
  • You have a very large cavity
  • You’d like to improve a tooth’s appearance

The Procedure

Preparing for your crown:

Because it’s precision-crafted at the lab, crowns require at least two visits. First, we will remove any decay and shape the tooth with the hand piece. Next, we place a small impression string between the tooth and the gum to gently push the gum away. This step helps us get an accurate impression. When the area is ready, we’ll remove the string, and then take an impression of your teeth. A dental lab will make a model from these impressions and then use the model to create your new crown. They create a crown that precisely fits your tooth and your bite. We then match the shade of your tooth to what your permanent crown will be. In the meantime, we place a temporary crown until your next visit.

Placing of a Crown:

On your next visit, we remove the temporary and try in your new crown. We’ll make sure you love the way it looks and feels. If everything looks good, then we cement the crown into place with permanent cement.
