First Year Dental Visit

When should you first take your child to the dentist? Sometime between when your baby's teeth come in and your child's first birthday. One reason is cost savings. If you bring your child to the dentist by the first birthday, studies show you'll spend less money on dental care for your child than the parents who delay their child's visit until after the first birthday.

Caring for Infant Teeth at Home

Caring for your infant’s teeth begins even before any teeth are visible. From birth until about 6 months, you should clean your child’s gums. Gently rub a damp cloth over the gums after each meal. Between 6 months and a year, teeth usually begin to appear. Now, it’s time to brush the teeth twice a day with a non-fluoride toothpaste or just plain water. Watch video >

Proper Flossing

When two of your child’s teeth are touching, it’s time to start flossing. Just as adults do, children need to remove the cavity-causing plaque and bacteria from between the teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach. Watch video >
