Chalfont Dentist

The Procedure

The Zoom! In office whitening system's procedure is simple and we at Chalfont Dental Care divide it into two appointments. Your first appointment begins with a short appointment where you come into our office for impressions for your customized bleaching trays. At this appointment we will also send you home with a prescription strength sensitivity toothpaste to prepare you for the procedure as a precaution. Your second appointment takes about an hour. It begins with a short preparation to cover your lips and gums, leaving only your teeth exposed. We then apply the Whitening gel, which is used with a specially designed light. The Zoom! light and gel work together to gently penetrate your teeth, breaking up stains and discoloration. With the proper care, your smile will sparkle for years.

A Note of Assurance

Tooth Whitening is a cosmetic procedure well-established for its safety. The whitening process is effective on most discolored teeth. Darker stains, such as those caused by antibiotics, are more difficult to whiten. The degree of whiteness will vary from patient to patient, depending on the structure of the teeth. Please also note that crowns, bridges, as well as fillings will not change shade with this procedure.

Take the first step to feeling good, looking great, and making a memorable impression every time you smile!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT TEETH WHITENING

What is tooth whitening?

It's a bleaching process that lightens discolorations of enamel and dentin. The system uses a mild solution retained in a custom-fitted tray that is worn over your teeth.

What causes tooth discoloration?

There are many causes. The most common include, aging, consumption of staining substances (coffee, tea, colas, tobacco), trauma, nerve degeneration, and old restorations. During tooth formation, consumption of tetracycline or excessive use of fluoride may also cause tooth discoloration.

Will I benefit from tooth whitening?

The majority of people benefit from tooth whitening. However, there are some cases where the treatment may not be effective. We will let you know if you're a good candidate for the process through a thorough examination and diagnosis. Darker stains, such as those caused by antibiotics, make take longer to respond to treatment. The degree of whiteness will vary from patient to patient, depending on the structure of your teeth, the number of applications, and/or the duration of time that the system is used.

Is the process safe?

YES! Research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth with Carbamide Peroxide or Hydrogen Peroxide under the supervision of a dentist is safe for teeth and gums. In fact, many dentists consider this whitening process the safest cosmetic dental procedure available today.

How does it work?

The whitening gel is placed in a thin customized bleaching tray that fits over your teeth. As the active ingredient in the gel is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin and bleaches the colored and stained areas. The structure of your tooth is not changed; only the tooth color is made lighter.

How long does it take?

Usually you'll see results immediately following your first application. You will experience even better results if you continue with your take home gel for a few nights after your treatment. The application process takes about 45 minutes to an hour once the preparation stage is complete.

Are there any side effects?

Some people may experience temporary increased tooth sensitivity to cold during the treatment. These symptoms disappear within 1-3 days after completion of the treatment. In order to avoid tooth sensitivity through the procedure, we provide you with a sensitivity toothpaste called Fluoridex.

How long do the results last?

Your teeth will always be lighter than they once were; however, some patients may need a tooth whitening "touch-up" for 1-2 days, once or twice a year. In order to maintain the whitest tooth shade possible, it is best to avoid substances like coffee, red wine and tobacco.
